# Driver's ed class notes — July 14, 2026 >[!info] Combined class record >These notes merge all three July 14 transcript parts in chronological order. Obvious errors such as “B&B/PMB” → **BMV**, “science” → **signs** where context required it, “break check” → **brake-check**, and malformed automotive terms were corrected. ## Class overview The class combined Lessons 2 and 3. The instructor framed [[defensive driving]] as an adult responsibility governed by safety, judgment, and attitude—not merely skill. Technical instruction covered sign colors and shapes, stopping and following distance, reaction time, tailgaters, basic vehicle controls, pre-drive checks, seat and mirror adjustment, starter positions, and automatic-transmission gears. ## Safety mindset and responsibility ### Driving as an adult responsibility The instructor used a “Mount Rushmore of growing up” analogy: 1. Obtaining a driver’s license. 2. Getting a job. 3. Paying bills. 4. Turning 18 and graduating. Driving was presented as the first of these adult responsibilities because the driver must respond responsibly to crashes, police stops, aggressive drivers, passengers, and time pressure. ### Safety is the controlling priority - Getting somewhere faster is never more important than arriving safely. - Being late for work or an appointment has limited consequences compared with rushing and causing a fatal crash. - A driver’s skill and knowledge are necessary but insufficient without sound judgment. - The instructor’s “Justin” example described a technically excellent student who later lost his license after repeated drag-racing offenses. The lesson was that behavior and choices determine whether someone is a good driver. - The manual similarly begins Chapter 7 by describing a defensive driver as one who anticipates other drivers’ actions. Examples included a right-turn-only lane and the Crown Point square, where missing advance signs can force abrupt, unsafe maneuvers. ## [[braking distance|Stopping the vehicle]] ### Three stages of a stop 1. **Recognize the need to stop.** The driver must see and interpret the hazard. 2. **Respond.** The brain directs the right foot from the accelerator to the brake. 3. **The vehicle responds.** Brakes, tires, road surface, speed, and vehicle condition determine the physical stop. This distinction supports the manual’s discussion in [Braking And Following Distances](<Indiana Driver's Manual.md#Braking And Following Distances>). ### [[reaction time]] And [[reaction distance]] - The instructor used an average driver reaction time of approximately 0.75 seconds. - At 60 mph, a vehicle travels approximately 66 feet during 0.75 seconds before braking begins. - **Reaction time** is the time between detecting a hazard and applying the brake. - **Reaction distance** is the distance traveled during reaction time. - **Braking distance** is the distance traveled after brake application until the vehicle stops. - **Stopping distance = reaction distance + braking distance.** ### Factors affecting stopping Driver factors: - Attention versus distraction. - Impairment, fatigue, medication, or another condition that slows response. Vehicle and road factors: - Speed. - Available space and urgency. - Tire and brake condition. - Pavement surface, grade, weather, and traction. >[!caution] Oversimplified statement in class >The instructor said doubling speed doubles braking distance. The 2026 manual does not state that rule; it lists the many variables affecting a stop. Do not use the instructor’s sentence as a precise calculation. Study the manual’s [Braking And Following Distances](<Indiana Driver's Manual.md#Braking And Following Distances>) section instead. ### Smooth pedal control - For normal starts and stops, think **squeeze**, not jab or stomp. - Smooth pressure keeps the vehicle balanced and makes steering easier to coordinate. - Emergency braking is different: apply the brake decisively when an immediate hazard requires it. - Practicing fine accelerator control while safely parked was suggested as a way to develop foot control. ### Maximum braking and [[anti-lock brake system|ABS]] The instructor explained that skidding locked wheels reduces control and described maximum conventional braking as occurring just before wheel lock. For a vehicle equipped with ABS, follow the manual: maintain firm, continuous brake pressure and steer normally; do not pump the brakes. See [Braking And Following Distances](<Indiana Driver's Manual.md#Braking And Following Distances>). ## [[following distance]], [[escape route|escape space]], And [[tailgating|tailgaters]] ### Measuring following distance - Choose a fixed roadside point. - When the vehicle ahead passes it, begin counting. - Stop counting when your vehicle reaches the same point. - The class baseline was two to three seconds. - The instructor recommended more space as speed or risk rises: roughly two seconds at low neighborhood speeds, three seconds on larger local roads, and four seconds on highways. The manual recommends at least two to three seconds and recognizes that conditions affect stopping. The driver should continually know where that space is. ### Handling a tailgater - Do not brake-check; doing so can cause a crash even if the following driver would be legally at fault. - Let the tailgater pass when safely possible. - Increase the space ahead so normal slowing can be gradual rather than abrupt. - Signal turns earlier than usual. ## [[vehicle control|Vehicle controls]] And pre-drive preparation ### Controls reviewed - Steering wheel and gear selector. - Parking/emergency brake: pedal, hand lever, or electronic switch depending on the vehicle. - Headlight control and high-beam operation through the turn-signal stalk. - Turn signal: generally up for right and down for left. - Dome/interior light. - Heat, air conditioning, fan, and front/rear defrost controls. - Door locks, window controls, mirror controls, and glove compartment. The instructor advised learning the specific vehicle rather than assuming every control works identically. ### Outside check before entering Approach attentively and check for: - Children, animals, bicycles, toys, or obstacles behind or beneath the vehicle. - Flat tires. - Leaking fluids. - Broken glass, lights, mirrors, or other damage. The instructor’s fatal-backover example illustrated why a backup camera does not replace knowing what is around the vehicle. ### Inside setup sequence 1. Adjust the seat if another driver has moved it. 2. Adjust rearview and side mirrors from the final seating position. 3. Fasten the seat belt. Seat position should permit full brake application with a slight bend in the knee and steering with a slight bend in the elbows. The rearview mirror should frame the rear window. Side mirrors should show only a small portion of the vehicle while covering the adjacent lanes. ## Starting and shifting an [[automatic transmission|automatic vehicle]] ### Starting - Put the right foot firmly on the brake. - For a key ignition, turn and hold through the spring-loaded start position until the engine starts, then release. - For push-button ignition, press and hold the start button with the brake applied. ### Ignition modes discussed - **Off:** vehicle systems off; steering may lock. - **Accessory:** limited accessories such as the radio. - **On/run without engine start:** dashboard and electrical systems active; steering remains available. - If an engine stops while the vehicle is moving, the instructor emphasized not turning the ignition fully off and locking the steering. ### Automatic-transmission positions | Position | Class explanation | |---|---| | Park | Engine can run; driven wheels do not turn; vehicle is held from rolling | | Reverse | Driven wheels move the vehicle backward | | Neutral | Engine does not drive the wheels; the vehicle can roll | | Drive | Driven wheels move the vehicle forward through automatic gear changes | | Low/1/2 | Greater low-speed pulling power; limited speed | The instructor emphasized that most automatic vehicles can be started only in **Park** or **Neutral**. ## What to review - [ ] Explain why safety and judgment matter more than technical skill alone. - [ ] Identify sign colors and the seven distinctive sign shapes. - [ ] Distinguish reaction distance, braking distance, and total stopping distance. - [ ] Demonstrate the fixed-object method for following distance. - [ ] Explain how to respond safely to a tailgater. - [ ] Locate and operate the essential controls in the vehicle Logan will practice in. - [ ] Practice the seat–mirrors–seat belt setup sequence. - [ ] Review ABS braking in the vehicle owner’s manual.
